Martin was born in Melhus, Norway, on the family farm,
Vollahågån, on June 28, 1888. In 1905, at the
age of 17, he left Norway to travel across the Atlantic
Ocean to the United States of America. He passed through England, arriving in Hull and departing from Liverpool. He arrived in Boston and went by train to Chicago where his brother, Nils, was living. While living in Chicago, Martin met met and married
